Question

You are the Chief Operating Officer for a small international computer company who has the opportunity to land a huge overseas client. You have been assigned the task of organizing a team to create a marketing plan to present to the potential clients this Thursday. Because the company is small and the team has limited resources, you rely on a team of three individuals from different departments to put together the major components of the proposal because you also have two earlier deadlines to meet. It is Wednesday and you just reviewed the progress memo presented by the team members. The proposal is far behind deadline and there is little chance a quality marketing plan will be produced in time for the Thursday morning meeting. Given the time restrictions, you feel the proposal is not robust enough to present to the clients. However, because there is an opportunity to gain a new international client, you feel pressure to present the marketing proposal.

1). What would you do in this situation? Would you present the proposal although you know it lacks quality? Why or why not?

2). What are the major ethical challenges presented in this scenario? What could have been done differently to prevent these ethical challenges?

3). Reflect on a past personal or professional experience where you felt pressure to do something that was not your best effort. Relate that situation and the outcome to your team. Explain what went wrong, what you would have done differently, and how that experience might help them solve the problems with their proposal.

Explanation / Answer

1. i call the people belongs to different departments like marketing department, production department, purchase department, human resource department, and finance department to discuss with the deal. by considering their views, i will prepare a presentation. i prepare it in effective way with maximum quality of work. i prepare it in the way and i presented it to the delegates. i make it as much as qualitative one with the limitaions, and present it over there.

the reason for this is, the foreign delegates visit inspite of all their busy schedules and spending some time here. here i prefer the concept of something is better than nothing, so, instead of standing them with empty hands, it is better to present a view with brief.

2. the ethical challanges here are, without having complete information, we assigned to prepare a presentation. we may not raise our voice agianst our boss or management, and that is the reason why we accept it and perform it. but if we provided sufficient time and all required information, the presentation may be most qualitative one rather than this.

if i were the boss or management, i assign parts of work to total team, and later i collect all those together and present it. people have limitations, as the boss i must consider them and design work for them. i may perform in this way if i were the boss.

3. a simple example, recently one of the external member visited and my family insisted my to prepare some delicious food in 30 minutes (i am an expert in cooking). i done it something, but i am not happy with it. if i was provided at least some additional time, i may done it in more tasty than this definitely. but time limitation also one of the constraint to every human and one must respect it too. due to insufficient time, it cook the food quickly, with does not carry their original characteristics like smell, color, taste and ingredients. later in our discussions i explained all these with my family and they were noticed the variation.
