devryu.instructure.com Topic: Week 2: Liberalism ve Unread Instructor 2:04pm Students, the U.S. Constitution is the oldest national constitution in the world. How has it lasted so long? A large part of the answer lies in the political realism of the Founding Fathers. Wherever the real power in a Government lies," James Madison (our country's 4th President) wrote to Thomas Jefferson at the time the Constitution was ratified in 1788, "there is the danger of oppression. Why did Madison make this point before he even became President? As noted in the essay: Given the talismanic power the word "democracy" has to modern ears, it is worth reminding ourselves that the U.S. Constitution was largely an effort to curb or trammel democracy Democracies, Madison wrote in Federalist 10, the most widely read and cited of the [Federalist Papers] essays, "have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths. Why? A mot often attributed to Benjamin Franklin explains it in an image. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Madison felt that factions" which constitute interest groups whose specialized or unique interests may be "adverse to the rights of other citizens" may serve to undermine a governmental structure that strives to serve all of the citizenry and not just the "vocal minority." Think back to our first week when we talked about governments and politics. Was Madison right? Now that we have the benefit of 230 years of history with the U.S. Constitution, do you think he was right or wrong? Explain your answer Reply Previous NextExplanation / Answer
There are different political ideologies and the long lasting ideology is democracy, involving a government elected by the people, for the people of the nation. It is the reason that it lasted so long in the USA and continues to be strong for its values, freedom and rights of the individuals and transparency in the governance. It is true that democracy involves a governance selected by the majority of the citizen, but it does not mean the exploitation and injustice for, those who voted against the political party in government (as was the case in communism or authoritarian government). It is the democracy that promoted the market based system, independence of the press, promotion of private property ownership and protection to the innovators to work without fear of theft of their ideas. It led to the robust growth, new employment and opportunity for people to do on their own as entrepreneurship. So, Madison was not right as he only looked the flaws of the democracy.
Obviously, Democracy has flaws, but it is regulated for the best of the society. It is the reason, the government function is distributed into three branches, named as executive, legislative and judiciary. These three branches can work independently of each other in a democracy. It is the democracy in the USA, where an executive order issued by the president can be shot down by the court of law on the basis of constitutional ground (courts of law in different states, revoking or staying the orders of the president Donald Trump regarding the ban of entry of people of selected countries in the USA). It cannot be imagined in any other political system other than the democracy to protect the human rights. Thus, Madison was not right.
