Cell and Tissue Engineering
The following generic data was collected for the growth of harvested chondrocytes in culture. After 112 hours, the cells ceased to proliferate Use this information to help calculate the following values. If you seeded a TEMP scaffold with the same starting number of chondrocytes (as in a.) and an equal number of smooth muscle cells (with doubling time 1/2 as long as the chondrocytes), calculate the amount of time required for the complete volume of the temp to be occupied by cells.Explanation / Answer
From the data it is calculated that, doubling time of chondrocytes is 36 hours approximately. Lets assume that after 112 hours, chondrocytes reach full scaffold and cease to proliferate. So, chondrocytes with initail count of 50000 cells and a doubling time of 36hrs reach 425000 cells. With a doubline time 1/2 (18hrs) as long as condrocytes, smooth muscle cells should take less time to reach a count of 425000 cells. In 18hrs they reach 100000 cells. So, to reach a number of 425000 cells how long do they take...???
(425000/100000)* 18 = 76.5 hrs.
So, smooth muscle cells take around 76 hrs to reach the complete volume of TEMP with an initial count of 50000 cells.
