Question

PA 8-3 A copy machine is available. A copy machine is available 24 hours a day. On a typical day, the machine produces 98 jobs. Each job takes about 3 minutes on the machine, 1 minutes of which is processing time and 2 minute is setup time (logging in, defining the job). About 18% of the jobs need to be reworked, in which case the set-up time and the processing time have to be repeated. The other time, the equipment is idle. What is the OEE of the equipment? (Round your percentage answer to 1 decimal place.) What is the OEE of the equipment? percent

Explanation / Answer

Answer to question 8.3 :

Total time required to process 98 jobs = 98 x 3 minutes = 294 minutes

Number of jobs to be reworked = 18% of 98 jobs = 17.64 jobs

Total time required for rework = 17.64 x 3 minutes = 52.92 minutes

Therefore, cumulative processing as well as rework time

= 294 minutes + 52.92 minutes

= 346.92 minutes

Duration of equipment availability in a day = 60 minutes / hour x 24 hours = 1440 minutes

Overall Equipment Effectiveness ( OEE )

= 346.92 / 1440 x 100

=24.09 % ( 24.1% rounded to nearest whole number )

OVERALL   EQUIPMENT EFFECTIVENESS = 24.1%

Answer to question 8.4 :

Exact flow time

= Waiting for the cutting machine + waiting time for the set up of machine + waiting for the other pieces of the batch going through cutting + time at cutting machine + Waiting time for transfer to the welding machine + Waiting time in front of welding machine for the batch to start + Waiting for the set up of welding machine + waiting time for the other pieces of the batch going through the welding machine + Time spent at welding operation + Waiting time for transfer to the next department

= 2 hour + 2 hour + 1 hour + 2 minutes + 3 hours + 1 hour + 2 hour + 0.55 hours + 0.55 minutes + 1 hour

= 12.55 hours and 2.55 minutes   ( 0.55 hours = 60 x 0.55 minutes = 33 minutes )

= 12 hours 35.55 minutes

Following are value added operations :

Total value added time = 2 + 0.55 minutes = 2.55 minutes

Value added percentage of flow time

= Total value added time / exact flow time x 100

= 2.55 minutes / 12 hours 34.55 minutes   x 100 ]

= 2.55 minutes / 754.55 x 100

= 0.3379 %

VLUE ADDED PERCENTAGE OF FLOW TIME = 0.3379%

Answer to question 8. 7 :

Total number of days of inventory for which Kanban has to be maintained

= 5 days lead time + 1 day safety stock

= 6 days

Since daily demand is 1500 units , quantum of inventory to be maintained in form of Kanban

= 1500 x 6

= 9000 units

Capacity of 1 container = 425 units

Number of containers needed to support the system

= 9000/425

= 21.17 ( 22 rounded to next whole number )

NUMBER OF CONTAINERS NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE SYSTEM = 22

OVERALL   EQUIPMENT EFFECTIVENESS = 24.1%
