Question
Turn to page 220 in your textbook, Something to Think About: Motivated To Do What? After reading the text, answer the following questions: 1) Describe your assessment of the company's work environment. 2) Reflecting on what you've learned from studying the various motivation theories, what does this situation tell you about employee motivalion? 3) If you were managing a team of Googlers, how would you keep them motivated? 4) Should Google invest the time to correct the situation or accept it as a normal part of doing business in the IT world? Defend your position.Explanation / Answer
1) Google's work environment is excellent. Having an awesome work environment is the reason why Google topped the list of "Best companies to work for." Talented colleagues to learn from, facilities like delicious food, massages, laundry, spa etc are more than what an employee of Google could ask for.
2) This is not a situation where employees are not motivated. It is the opposite. The employees are motivated to do something excellent. They want to achieve something for themselves. Whatever facilities employees get at thecompany, they still remain an employee at the end of the day. People want to be their own bosses and get complete reward for their hard work rather than sharing it with their employer.
3) Managing a team of Googlers would be much easier as they most probably will be self-motivated to do excellent work. I don't think they would be at Google if they lacked motivation. However, to motivate them further, I would give them freedom to execute ideas with minimal supervision. In addition, I would make them partners with the company in regard to any innovation they make. For example, if an employee comes up with a great idea, he will be made the head of the project and profits coming out of the project would be shared between the employee and Google.
4) I do not think that there is any need for making corrections in this case. It is natural for employees to strive to create something for themselves. Only thing Google can do is to become a partner with the employees having innovative ideas by funding their projects and sharing profits with them i.e. Google should act as an investor instead of treating them just as employees whose ideas can be taken and used for the benefit of the company.
