Innovation at Workplace
Innovation means in simple language to invent a new idea, strategy, method or product according to our own need, and innovation at workplace is most important because techonology keeps on hanging and to meet its demand we have to invent new ways to tacke the situation in an effective way. Lets take an example of Sales department at any organisation, we know that in order to acheive our goal/profit oor sales techinque must be very much effective in order to attract new customers, affecting in the sence tha to provide some kind of promotional offers to the customer, or to give the new customers heavy discount in order to make the entry of a product effective in the market. Innovation depends upon the different market situation wherein the organisation exists, like in perfect competition market situation, the innovative technique is different and in case of monopoly market, the innovation technique is different.
Innovation is basically looking at coustomers, what they need, not for our comfort and security, i.e keeping in mind their viewpoint we invent new things, ideas, etc. From a layman's point of view, both creativity and innovation means the same, but in actual terms there is a huge difference between them, Creativity means the imagination and Innovation means its implementation. In any workplace innovation is not the cup of tea of lower level management, but it is for the top level management, i.e they exactly know what is the actal need of the customers in the market and according to that the new strategy will be implemented. Innovation is now a work of single person, it needs team spirit i.e team work is needed in order to make something innovative and creative because it needs so much of research and study to know what actualyy the customer needs/wants.
Innovation is about creating a cultural/moral value, increasing the efficiency and thereby increasing the business in terms of growth/profit. For any innovation to work at an organisation there must be a proper method or procedure to be followed such as firstly we have to plan according to the need of the customer or according to changing technology, we have to identify the problem, i.e where the innovative technique will be helpful in order to gain result, after that we have to create a new idea, that will fit into that problem and will work effectively, after that the execution stage comes where in the idea according to the ned is implemented, after implementation it is analyised that is it effective according to the customer's need or not i.e its benefit is analysed in terms of profit or the growth of the business.
Components of Innovation at Workplace
Certain barriers to innovation at workplace
External Barrier:- 1. Market Related barrier such as, the new technology that is prevailing in the current scenario, the demand and supply of new product in the market, type of market in which it is prevailing, etc
2. Government regulatuion or ploicies, from time to time, government policies changes to include some kind of tax in its valuation or to exclude, depends upon the decision of the government, to impose custom duty or not, some kind of act is implemented retrospectively or not, etc.
3. Others ( Technical, Socio-Cultural, inter organisational barrier) while innovating a new idea or a product, keeing in mind what other organisations are doing is also most important, keeping an eye is important to have a perfect competition in the market, the need of the customers, etc
Internal Barrier 1. Communication barrier Sometimes it happens that there is a communication gap between the higher level management and the lower level management, that the basic idea behind the implementation is invisible and some othething is implemented which is not according to the need of the customer, threrefore there is a need to communicate effectively and efficiently the idea all over the organisation, there are some kind of information whisch is relevant only for the higher level management, which if shared with teh lower level management will defeat its purpose.
2. Strategy Related Barrier Organisation's strategy differs from one point of view to another, for one person, strategy is fit and from others point of view the strategy is not fit, therefore this strategy related barrier is there at worplace, and it is to be implemeted keeping in view the organisation as a whole.
3. Resistance to Change There are times when, an organisation is not able to resist the change and inturn it leads to huge losses, therefore this this of barrier is very much dangerous for any organisation, there must be an alternative plan
Implementing Innovation has three main parts:- Firsty it is the Big Ideas, i.e accoring to the research and study of current market, the customer needs, etc, secondly the pople, the target groups in the market, that the new strategy will be targeted, and lastly it is the process, i.e how it will be implemented, the detailed procedure.
Innovation is not a short term process rather it is a long term, it is measured keeping in mind various factors such as:- to compare the presesnt results with that of past result in terms of profit, the growth of an organisation, at innovative technique, resistance to change, it is to be compared only when the target resut is to be acheived.
Additional Improvements of Innovation within the organisation- Ensure that the organisation truly understand the customer needs, accordingly to create the new strategy, to establish a relationship with their business partner effectively, to create a culture of contuneous improvement, increase an investment in new idea generation most importantly, to provide reward or incentive and recognition for innovation.
