Explanation / Answer

The US being a republic, not a democracy is a false dichotomy. It is a political order in which power lies in the representatives. In the Government by the people, democracy is exercised through the elected representatives. In a direct democracy, laws & decisions are made by a majority Government. The government may be aristocratical, monarchical, or, democratical. The United States is a constitutional democracy. Courts can restrain the democratic will. The US Government is the Constitutional Federal representative democracy. One can ask for a shift towards a direct democracy, but it can make governing difficult in case of a coalition. Also, passing laws is difficult in case of a rule of a large number of small parties.

Natural rights, and, social contract are attributed to Enlightment. In the 4th century, Athens can be interpreted as a social contract. In a direct democracy, citizens choose alternatives that maximize an individual's welfare. A set of strategies are chosen, and, a political framework changes on the basis of these strategies. A political system thus resembles a mathematical model. Democracies try to look for an optimal rate of change.

The benchmark for an optimal rate of political change is the neoclassical theory. Athens was an advanced system of direct democracy. Citizens could introduce proposals in front of the decision-making body. The Athenian direct democracy achieved a balance between volatility, and, stability. The model of choice in a direct democracy shows the possibility of Pareto improving solutions when compensatory payments are allowed.
