In what ways can you, as a manager, contribute to the management and execution of your organization’s strategy?
As a manager I play a crucial role in strategy execution. I contribute the content, act as a link between the different organizational level such as the team members, direct supervisors, management, etc. I serve as performance model in strategy execution. To contribute to strategy execution, I would do the following-
How is strategic planning a dynamic versus linear process, and why?
Strategic planning is a dynamic process and not a linear one. In other words, strategic planning is a creative or dynamic process. No clear set of linear equations or static process is followed. Instead, a manager takes any direction for strategic thinking rather than adhering to a step-by-step of linear process. It involves dynamic decision making skills for strategic planning.
Summarize the purpose of the SWOT analysis and how it is best used in the healthcare planning process?
SWOT analysis is used to identify the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats in an industry. It is very useful in the healthcare planning process. The internal factors namely strengths and weaknesses are used as a marketing tool to effectively market the strengths of the healthcare organization. Strengths such as geographic location, cost advantages, value added services needs to be invested upon in the healthcare planning process. On the other hand, the weaknesses are harmful. However, weaknesses needs to be identified and addressed properly for improvement.
The external factor opportunity is helpful while threats are considered as harmful. A healthcare organization should plan effectively based on the opportunities that exist in the industry. It should determine best ways of how to execute them. For example, availability of a new technology is an opportunity for a healthcare organization. Threats are harmful to the health care organization. The healthcare planning should include ways to mitigate threats and how a threat can be converted to an opportunity. For example, a new competitor in the home market is a threat for the healthcare organization.
Are there any differences related to strategic planning in healthcare versus planning in another organization?
Strategic planning is essential for all types of organizations including the healthcare organizations. Strategic planning depends on the unit or the department size, its complexity and the different types of services provided. The leader of each unit is responsible for promoting the strategic planning process. In the health care organization, a cardiology department head is responsible to drive the strategic planning which should align with the organizational level strategic planning. In operational planning in other organizations, departments such as the sales and marketing promote strategic planning. Broadly speaking, the organization type and the nature of the services provided are the only difference in formulating strategic plans. Otherwise, the process and the purpose of strategic planning remains the same for both the healthcare and other organizations.
Can quality of care initiatives be linked to the strategic planning process? If so, how?
Yes, quality of care initiatives can be linked to the strategic planning process. For example, quality health care needs to be provided for people with Medicaid. This is a highest priority by the President and other health care departments. Some quality of care initiatives in this field are setting quality measures for clinics and nursing homes, health agencies in the town, hospitals, etc. ‘Population health Driver Diagram’ can be adopted as a quality improvement tool in strategic planning for these factors. This diagram is used to identify the primary and secondary drivers of a health issue in a community so that these can be improved upon. This is considered as strategic planning for quality of care initiatives for the community.
