Question

How do you determine the rest of the chart?
How many different genes are operating to produce the yellow flower color?

Complementation tests of recessive mutant genes a through f produced the data in the matrix below. The circles represent missing data. The + represent plants with yellow flowers (wild-type); the- represent plants with white flowers (mutants). Assume that all of the missing mutant phenotypes would yield data consistent with the entries that are known. Complete the table by filling each circle with a + or a -- as needed.

Explanation / Answer

by using complementation test we can determine the rest of the chart.

since + is present in the row and column for 'a' and 'e' it shows that 'a' is complementing 'e' and together it produces yellow flower. similarly, 'a' complements 'b' producing yellow flower.

Thus, 'b' as well as 'e' are on different loci than 'a' allele.

However, 'a' and 'c' are producing white flowers. Thus, not complementary alleles, stating that they are on same loci.

'c' and 'd' is also '-' thus, they are not complementary.

however, 'e' and 'f' are complementing and producing '+' i.e. yellow flowers. Thus, are present on separate loci.

So, total there are 3loci each with

         1: a,c,d

         2: b,f

         3: e

complete table is as follows:
