You are a human resource professional at a large retail chain working to standardize the company’s design for interviewing by insuring that all interviewees for a specific job answer the same questions. The questions need to be relevant to the job and maintain equal employment opportunity. Develop three questions to include in the interview process for each of the following three jobs. For each question, state why you think it should be included.

a. Cashier at one of the company’s stores.

b. Buyer of the store’s teen clothing line.

c. Accounts payable clerk at company headquarters.

Explanation / Answer

I would ask this question to try to determine what they deem to be important in the position they are applying for.

I would ask this to see how they would not only handle customers on a social level but how they would also handle assisting a customer regardless of the fact they held the answers they needed. Would they pawn the issue off on another employee or work with the customer to figure out a solution?

I find this to be an important question as this position requires an individual to keep an open mind and remained unbiased in their purchases.

This question attempts to determine to individual’s ability to separate their preferences and do what is on the agenda for the company.

This position requires the individual to stay current and keep up with the everchanging ways of teen clothing, I would like to see some of their own ideas on how they would manage this task.

I believe this question allows for the employee to reflect on the importance of their position and how precision would be a key factor to maintain success.

I believe this question investigates the integrity of the applicant.

This question can determine problem-solving skills, integrity, an understanding of the chain of command and honesty.
