Question

Help. Thank you in advance! Assignment 5.3: Validity and Reliability Issues in the Data Collection Process ty This assignment asks you to read a research brief that is well developed and easy to follow You are asked to evaluate the brief by identifying the problem being addressed, the hypotheses that address the problem, and additional items important to the research process Word Count: 250 words Assignment Consider this assignment a continuation of Assignment 5.2. You are the administrator of cardiovascular services and you provided your recommendation to the Director of Quality Management (Ms. Alice Sivestry) regarding how to proceed with data collection. You are now a member of the newly formed Cardiovascular Quality Improvement Team. The team is seeking input on how best to ensure the accuracy and consistency of data that are being collected. You decide to write a memo to the team detailing your opinion on the issues of validity and reliability (accuracy and consistency) Based on your readings from Assignment 5.1, as well as the Kimberlin and Winterstein article, write a memo to Ms. Silvestry that includes the following 1. An overview of why the issues of validity and relíability are so important to your data collection efforts 2. A recommendation on how best to monitor and ensure the accuracy and consistency of the data being collected 3. A rationale for your recommendation Your memo should be written using vocabulary and grammar consistent with your standing as a healthcare professional. No outside resources beyond those listed in the lesson are necesary or expected All sources, including course materials, must be cited in text in APA style. If necessary, see the MHA program definition of outside and peer-reviewed sources in MHA Information and Resources. Using the MHA adaptation of APA citation, your reference page will contain only your outside sources Go to MHA iInformation and Resources for the writing assignment grading rubric. Explanation / Answer

Answer: This is to to bring to your notice the importance of reliability and validity of measuring instruments in healthcare data collection. Reliability is a proxy for consistency and stability of the measurement. Validity measures the suitability or meaningfulness of the measurement.

For high reliability the error component must be reduced and measurements must reflect the true score.Reliability is of various types like test-restest, inter-rater,internal consistency.Reliability correlation can be computed between 2 events basis repeated use of instrument, similarity of items and equivalence of instruments. Reliability can be improved by studying the administratio of research /study/trials.

Reliability can be improved by

-respondant validation

-inter rater reliability exploration

-calculating inter-rater agreement

-calculating inter-rater consistency

Validity can be improved by :

-removing user bias, using triangulation

-Appropriate sample selection which is representative of entire population

-statistical data anaysis

-using simple blind and double blind techniques

Validity is a yardstick of how well(ie the degree) the instrument measures the intended objective and includes face, construct, criterion and content validation. Both internal and external validity are crucial in determining the appropriateness, meaningfullness and usefuless of the data collection. If the instrument does not measure what it is intended to measure than the results cannot be used for the research or study.Te results cannot be interpolated to generalise any findings and will antamount to wastage of our time and efforts.Internal validity is extremely crucial for internal research and clinical trials for experimental design set up to measure the impact of independent variables on dependent variable under strict controlled environment. External validity can be ensured is samples are representative of the entire population and the research findings generalization is possible if external validity is high.Internal validity can be controlled by controlling the parameters impacting internal validity.

Both validity and reliability of the findings are required to ensure design of healthcare delivery
