The textbook defines sustainable products as “products that meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. Sustainability is becoming increasing more important and driving retail companies to implement cleaver ways to (1) reduce packaging waste and (2) lightening packaging weight. Some companies are designing packaging that are close-looped in that the packing material can be used for reverse logistics shipments (i.e. toner cartridges). Select, research a company and report on what they are doing to achieve sustainable packaging. Write a brief abstract (1/2 page) on your findings.

Explanation / Answer

One of the well documented environmental issue with packaging has been the holder of six pack beers. These plastic enclosures were littered around the beaches and often would go underwater. Once under the water, they either create hazard by entangling with the fish or they get swallowed by the fish. Nonetheless they have caused a lot of pain to the marine life over the last few decades.

One of the beer companies, named Saltwater Brewery has been working towards making this six pack rings as eco-friendly as possible. What they do is, they use the barley leftovers from the brewing process and then compress them to make the rings that hold the six cans of beer. The rings are not only completely bio degradable but once underwater, they disintegrate. This means when the rings reach the ocean it not only avoid hazard for the fish but it also becomes food for them.

These rings are actually manufactured by an organization called e6pr but saltwater Brewery has been one of their key sponsors. Considering that the beer consumption around the world is several billion gallon and most of us throw the plastic rings into drains which land up in the ocean, it is a noble approach to provide an eco-friendly, bio-degradable, edible beer rings for consumption.
