Question

After completing the Module 4b reading material, consider this article titled "Does Money Really Motivate People?" posted to www.bbc.com by Carianne Piekema in November of 2014. Managers usually jump to defend money as the best motivator in all situations, and employees will think anyone that challenges money as a motivator to be crazy. But from a scientific standpoint (e.g. management, social psychology, neuroscience), money is a complex motivator that challenges basic intuition. If you do not believe our Lecture PowerPoint or this article, feel free to Google the issue yourself and see what you find. Thoughts?

Explanation / Answer

Money has attracted every human being,For us money is charming. But if you consider money as a motivator I would not say no to it.Money or any other reward can treated as an extrinsic motivator whereas personal interests are intrinsic. The research from Deci and Ariely suggests that Huge money rewards cannot enhance performance but rather degrade it.This can be expained as huge rewards on the line increases the pessure on human mind and we try to overfocus which clearly hinders our performance. But I personally believe that Motivation cannot purely come from money but it should be a balanced affair,A person can extremely be motivated to do the things he likes(personal interests) which can reap some rewards although not too big.Infact you cannot make someone creative just by offering him money but rather you make someone work for you by offering him money.I believe that Murayama and Matsumoto’s findings are more complete and help us understand that the motivation should be both extrinsic and intrinsic for optimal performance.
