Globalization—the expansion of organization markets worldwide which causes greater competition with low wages overseas and changes in federal policies to regulate international selling and purchasing of goods

E-Governance—governmental use of technology to improve service in a more timely and efficient manner which helps cut costs and increase citizen participation

Public-private partnerships—collaboration between a government agency and a private sector company to fulfill a developmental project

I chose these terms because they demonstrate the image of public service and its employees verses the reality. The reality is the majority of public administrators serve for the common good and allow citizens to play an active role in decisions affecting their communities. These terms also acknowledge the ever-changing role of administrative services which are becoming more convenient for the public. Ultimately, the future of public administration is to be more transparent with citizens and create greater programs which serve the best interest of society. These terms are important because there must be transparency and citizen awareness to serve in the public sector. Having no empathy or concern for the citizens in which one serves will not develop a trusting relationship between government and constituents. Thus, problems will arise as goals are not communicated clearly.

Public Service Culture

Public service is an important field to study because it analyzes the differences and similarities of serving in the public sector verses the private sector. It is accurate to state that individuals do not make big money doing public service. Many of the organizational management theorists in prior readings listed monetary rewards as important factors in employee motivation. However, for the public sector Lois Wise lists a public servant’s “belief in the importance of a particular program to society” has great job motivation (Stillman, 2010, p. 323). Citizenry needs to hear more about the stories of public servants who perform their jobs for the common good of society. For example, an individual might work for FEMA because of how the government services may have saved his/her life during a time of urgent disaster. Another motive for public service is the responsibility of educating the community about the governmental process and public policy issues. Through this motive, a civil servant works in order to inform the public of their democratic rights and how they can get involved to see the changes they want to see in society. Thriving public servants work past the mediocrity of bureaucracy and value the ethos and pathos of the communities they serve.

Explanation / Answer

In order to demonstrate the image of the public service such terms are important because the mass or population needs to understand what the government executes or plans to execute based on such approaches because if the objective of such actions are not aware, then there is no point planning to improve the situation of the public. I believe that anything that the government does or atleast plan to do should be of high quality and ensure that they have an impact on the society as well.
