Soft Skills in the Workplace
Explanation / Answer
1. I work in a company which has embraced the structural aspects of informal mode of communication in the office. But even then, there was this one time when an employee, used their cellphone during the time of a crucial meeting. It was not wrong for them to do so. But, given the time and situation, it could just as easily be deemed inappropriate. This came to the attention of the VP of sales, who was heading the meeting and therefore, the employee was reprimanded for their actions and just as easily lost their value in our own eyes.
2. Given the time and place, the mode of conduction as well as the situation in which the mode of text messaging is utilized, if the situation calls for it, I do prefer text messaging over the more traditional form of letter and email, for the simple fact that it allows me direct communication, easier access as well as allows me the ability to be able to work faster in situations which require instant decision making processes. This would not be possible through the use of tradional mode of communications.
3. I feel that using a cellphone service such as messaging in a classroom setting would not be appropriate or even considered successful due to the nature of its implementation and the area and situation it is being implemented in. School setting is different from a workplace setting, in the sense that even though the classroom would benefit from the use of text messaging, they would not be able to solidify their resolve and use it for the purpose it is meant to be used for. In an office setting, employees know what is required from them and therefore, act accordingly. While in the school or classroom setting, giving children an unsupervised access to the functions of text messaging in order to facilitate easier transfer of information could prove to be a mistake just as much as it has its advantages.
4. Yes, I do use Facebook in both my personal as well as professional life but with separate accounts. This is because there is a need to maintain a distinction when it comes to personal and professional life. Also, the use of Facebook, in my case, is due to the nature of socialisation it provides. Not only does it allow me to stay close to the family relations I have, but it also allows me the ability to bring my professional achievements and candidature for another prospective employer in the need when I want to explore other horizons. It allows socialisation between businesses, employees and coworker and can be used to maintain a network of communication in the office setting as well.
