Explanation / Answer

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an important federal law which provides prohibition for the employers from any kind of discrimination against the employees on the matters of sex, race, colour, national origin and religion. It is applicable to the employers who are 15 or more and this includes federal, state and local governments. It is also applicable for private, public colleges, employment agencies and universities.

The law does not allow any discrimination and practice for an employer against the individual with relation to compensation, conditions, terms, privileges provided for employment based on race, colour, religion, sex or nationality. It pays attention to compensation, assignment and classification of employees. It takes into account prohibition of any kind of discrimination pertaining to fringe benefit, terms and conditions of employment, retirement plans etc.

A hypothetical situation is the discrimination faced by a person because of the marriage status. The woman was not promoted in a higher position and discriminated because of her marriage status assuming that she will now be planning for a kid and will not be able to handle higher position if promoted. This is discrimination and discrimination against one's religious practices. The employee can file a complaint with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Internal procedures can be used at the workplace
