Strategic alliance is agreement between two or more companies that decides to work together to achieve objectives that are mutually beneficial. Such companies share resources, knowledge, skills and risks to achieve this. Reason for entering into a strategic alliance is to gain from the advantageous position of one company's innovations without investing in new research and development.Also forming a strategic alliance is more cost-effective and beneficial.

Starbucks

Starbucks partnered with Barnes and Nobles bookstores in 1993 to provide in-house coffee shops, benefiting both partners. In 1996, Starbucks also partnered with Pepsico to utilized their infrastructure and technology produce, distribute and sell the popular coffee-based drink, Frappacino. Starbucks entered into allaince with United Airlines alliance to distribute their coffee on flights with the Starbucks logo on the cups .

Apple

Apple has allaince with Sony, Motorola, Phillips, and AT&T in the past. Apple has also partnered with Clearwell to develop Clearwell's E-Discovery platform for the Apple iPad. It is used by legal entities to obtain documents and information in a manner that is within legal premises.

Hewlett Packard and Disney

Hewlett-Packard and Disney have an alliance since 1938, when Disney purchased eight oscillators from HP founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. When Disney wanted to develop a virtual attraction called Mission: SPACE, Disney benefitted from HP's IT infrastructure, servers and knowledge to create Disney's most technologically advanced attractions.
