Question
Review the six core principles of andragogy shown below. For each principle, describe a personal experience that validates each statement.
Adults need to know why they need to learn something before learning it.
The self-concept of adults is heavily dependent upon a move toward self-direction.
Prior experiences of the learner provide a rich resource for learning.
Adults typically ready to learn when they experience a need to cope with a life situation or perform a task.
Adults’ orientation to learning is life-centered; education is a process of developing increased competency level to achieve their full potential.
The motivation for adult learners is internal rather than external.
Explanation / Answer
1. By the time of adulthood, one has learned a number of skills and he /she is putting them to good use. Any new skill learnt will surely take some time and effort from the learner. This is a reason, why an adult always want to assess if the new skill is worth the time and effort and how it will be used by him /her in he future life. An example is teaching accounts to a air traffic controller, who would surely want to learn something else that will improve his / her skills to perform at the job.
2. Adult learn in the best way when they are self directed to learn the things. This is the reason, most of the adult learning contains more autonomy to choose the learnign path and develop a learning style. For example, the two adolescents are expected to learn something largely in the same way, while two adults are likely to learn it in their own different styles.
3. Needs often compell the adults to learn something. For an example a mandate to learn computers or to accept voluntary retirement has forced many old hands in government departments to learn computers.
4 In adults, the new things are learnt on the foundation of previous experiences where the learner relates the new discoveries to the previous life experiences. For an example, someone who has a rich public dealing experience may learn counselling more easily than others.
5. Objective of adults' learning is more of a process of self actualisation and application of those skills in real life situations to solve them. The example is a senior executive who wants to learn programming to deal with technology professionals in a better way and manage the things better.
6. Motivation of adult learners is always internal because in most cases, the learning is not mandatory, and is motivated through the prospects of self actualisation, knowledge enhancement and skill upgradation for self gratification and satisfaction.
