Personality Traits
The traits in the big five personality model include openness to experience, extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Openness in Henry Ford was reflected by his intellectual curiosity and creativity that is evident in his inventions. Henry Ford had unusual ideas and imaginative in his work. He was environmentally conscientious as evidenced by his interest in using automobile parts out of soybeans to reduce reliance on metal parts (Christopher, 2008). He had a tendency of remaining organized and acted dutifully to achieve his goals of growing his company and making cars more accessible to the mass market. Extraversion in Henry Ford was indicated by his energy, assertiveness, and sociability (Wright, 2013). Henry Ford was not agreeable as he had an antagonistic attitude towards others especially when it involved his ideas. While he had a helpful nature, his firmly held his ideas and opinions and was not open for discussion. He also was neurotic which was reflected by his tendency to experience bad emotions such as anxiety and anger.
Traits in the Dark Triad model include psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism. Henry Ford was a narcissist who was distrustful of other people and was emotionally isolated (Nathanson, 2007). Perceived threats to his business triggered rage which influenced his creativity and innovation in his company. He lacked empathy and displayed grandiosity after achieving his goals. Ford is a typical example of the Machiavellian who exploited people and focuses on self-interest. He supported labour welfare measures, but his approach was manipulative as he wanted his workers to have more disposable income so that they could become be potential buyers for the cars produced in his company (Bragues, 2008). Ford’s behaviour also had psychopathic traits. For example, he used henchmen to spy on his employees. His remorselessness was reflected by his adultery and covering up his misconduct.
