Question
Telehealth is a blanket term for all interactions that might go on between a provider and patient remotely. It goes way beyond just a provider virtual visit; your textbook discusses some of the other ways it is used.
However, it is not all good. Vulnerable populations can be taken advantage of, and it is almost impossible to verify that a virtual visit took place. This opens the door to various types of fraud.
In your first post:
Describe a specific type of telehealth (remote patient/provider interaction).
Using peer reviewed research, discuss what the experts say are the pros and cons of this healthcare method.
Propose some suggestions on how to prevent fraud in this area and assure that proper interactions are taking place with the patients.
Explain whether you would participate in telehealth, as a patient or provider. Why or why not?
.
Explanation / Answer
Evolution of cutting edge technology and communication medium turned out to be boon for needy people too. Among them one is telehealth. Super- specialized hospitals and doctors are not available in all localities and especially remote place. People suffering from various health related problems faces various lack of super-specialized consultation. This inaccessible problem of availability of super educated healthcare can be better fillip through telehealth. I will suggest interaction between specialized doctor and patient who lives in remote location. For periodic consultation and routine checkup, the doctor can use telehealth facility to do this. These patients can visit a nearby hospital and the attending doctor can liaison with the specialized doctors through telehealth.
There are pros and cons of this model. Pros are that it is easy to use, fillip the availability of specialized healthcare professionals in that locality, easy to use, it saves cost of healthcare which is critical for normal citizen. Cons are it is a bit complex procedure and need specialized person to deal with this. Face to face interaction with patient helps the doctor to know deep about the problem. Telehealth lacks human interaction among the patient and doctor.
Frauds can be checked when there will be a body to monitor the telehealth professional. They should be registered with a body like doctors and should have registration number. When they communicate with the patient the details should be captured in a system which record the conversation. Through this fraud can be checked. For keeping regular interaction among the healthcare personnel and patient there should a monthly visit to the remote area by healthcare professional and to interact face to face with the patient.
I would associate with telehealth as a provider because through this I can do something for the society and the needy people
