Question
What is globalization? You worry about what Facebook should do to protect themselves from risks in the event of a dispute in regards to an international business venture(s). You read, “more than 50 countries have passed laws over the last five years to gain greater control over how their people use the web[.]” (Paul Mozur, Mark Scott and Mike Isaac, 2017) Wow! 50 countries with laws in the last five years, how will any company (or in this case, Facebook) keep up! What do you advise in the context of globalization?
Explanation / Answer
Globalization has been defined differently by different scholars and practitioner but according to me globalization is flow of information, idea, product, people and knowledge in the world without any reasonable barriers. What Facebook is undergoing threat in its venture has not related to the very notion of globalization. Globalization has helped Facebook to make itself a household name and a robust brand in the world. Facebook is now going through data protection issue. It has collected data from the users who trust Facebook and share their data but in turns Facebook monetize it with out the consent of the user. This is the major problem Facebook is reeling under. It is true that 50 countries have enacted law for the shake of their national interest. There are fringe elements which use Facebook to provoke people for riot, communal clash, conflict among communities, terrorist activities, disturbing the cultural fabrics of the country and drug smuggling too. To protect own country from such malaise these countries have enacted law so that they can have control if any illegal and antisocial activities people are doing through Facebook.
