Some of the benefits on conducting an informational interview are being able to obtain a perspective on the day in the life. At times a position can see right for you and what you really want to do until you actually are in this position or you speak to someone who works in this role and a few red flags pop up. In addition, this also helps with understanding the career path you could take with a role as well which is important, we all want a role or position that is fulfilling but then we have to begin to think about what is next for sure.
The other important piece that you can learn from this interview is the challenges you may face in the role and how to overcome it. The last thing I would acknowledge is demands on this type of role and how will this fit into your lifestyle as well. I like to give the example of my wife's role, she always has people that ask her all the time to give them a preview of her role as a Global HR Executive and the position seems so glamorous from the travel stand point and working globally. While my wife does enjoy this role, but at times she works odd hours or has a full day and has to come home to take late night meetings to speak with her team members in Asia. Overall, speaking to someone who works in the role that you are seeking is very crucial

An informational interview is a conversation between the potential candidates and employed professional. Here, the job seeker gains knowledge on the future job, their roles and responsibilities, industry, its culture, the ways of working etc. On the other hand, the recruiter (HR or Technical person) could judge the knowledge, skills, their passion to work from this interview. It is an opportunity to have a good rapport with a potential mentor or job seeker. These interviews last from 20 to 60 minutes. It can be formal or informal. If the recruiter calls you or emails you regarding the position, it becomes a formal conversation, and if you are seeking knowledge about a position from your HR or Faculties or any Career Counsellor, not really seeking for the job in the discussion, then it becomes informal. For example, if there is a vacancy in the organization which you are interested in and you are asking your HR regarding eligibility, preferences then it is an informal informational conversation where your questions are unstructured. Again, if you are an intern and you are seeking for a higher position on a full-time basis and you are asking the details about the job to your mentor or guide, then it is informational interview or conversation.
