Question

For this week’s assignment pick a product with which you are very familiar with or take the time to go through your clothes closet and try and find a product made in the USA, or one that you can anticipate being able to research easily.

Map the supply chain of your product as far back as is feasible. A simple example is a diamond sold by a local jewelry store, purchased direct from diamond wholesalers in the Netherlands, bought by wholesalers from diamond centers in South Africa, and brought out of mines owned by a company in South Africa. Identify as many participants in the channel as possible by company name and location.

Identify the mode of transportation used between each stage in the channel.

Identify by name and location the component parts of the product if any.

Explanation / Answer

I would like to take an example of the brand which is known as the low-cost retailer and expanding its brand all over the world. The brand name is MINISO and there are many products under this brand, to take an example of the product one can consider a neck pillow.

The company is expanding rapidly in India. The company is procuring the products in China and is sending the products in India through various logistic companies. Let us try understanding the end to end supply chain of MINISO.

The products are purchased with several vendors in China and branded in the name of MINISO which is then send to different parts of the world and sold in the retail store. For sending the material a container is used which is filled with different products. These containers are custom cleared at the ports or airport i.e. dependent on the mode of transportation that is going to be used to deliver the product in the international location. The product then reaches the location, let suppose it is Mumbai in India. The containers are kept in the CFS (Container Freight Station) which is inside the foundation of the custom. The container need to be customer cleared and then handed over to the company. From the ports or airports, these containers are then carried to the warehouses at different parts of the country. The transportation is generally done with the help of 20 feet or 40 feet trailers and is stored in the warehouse for further distribution to its retail store. The distribution of the products from warehouse to the retail stores are generally carried away with the help of small trucks and vans depending upon the demand. The products are then directly sold to the customers. This is a general trend for end to end logistic process for all kind of products that are being transported from one part of the world to the other.
