Emotions and intellectual quotients are often complementary to each other. Many experts believe that they are inversely proportional to each other. While that logic can be debatable, there has been increasing need emotional intelligence within organizations. These needs are still at a considerably rudimentary level however, going by the trend they may soon become a key consideration in hiring process. The challenge that may be posed due to focus on emotional intelligence is clearly indicated in this question.

The want for emotional intelligence could reach a point where it impacts logical and performance driven decision making.

If that happens then the businesses will be harmed as the likely results of such decisions will bear higher risk of being wrong. If the question is about if such incident (statement above) can happen? I feel it is very unlikely.

You see, the organizations are driven by goals. Often these goals are to make profit or to make a difference. However, at the heart of every organization is a goal. In order to achieve these goals we need people who are capable of achieving these goals. Naturally, in addition to the skills if a person has emotional capability, then it is very good. But then organizations are not driven by emotions but with sheer logic and the success of the goals depend on the correctness of the decisions that are taken. This is only possible if the risk associated with the decisions are less. In order to do that, we need pragmatic thinkers and decision makers. Naturally this calls for a higher weightage towards logical and critical thinking than emotional thinking.

Due to these reasons, there will likely be no scenario when the need for emotional intelligence overtakes the critical thinking ability in an organization.

Team leaders or an executive definitely needs emotional intelligence. However, there are no limits on these. The limits can vary depending on the capability and the nature of the team. The emotional quotient of the team leader should be in harmony with the one of the team. That is what is important.
