Question

RosaLee has over 25 years of customer service and administrative experience. She has a home office with high-speed Internet, a great phone service, and most everything else she needs to work from home. However, she has been fired from her last three jobs because of excessive absences due to caring for her elderly parents.

Rick has muscular dystrophy, which robs him of motor skills and his ability to hold down his last job as a technical data clerk. His physical challenges prevent him from working outside his home but he has excellent communication skills. He sees working as a homeshore rep as an opportunity to be productive and earn money for his family by taking customer service, technical support, and inbound sales calls from his home.

Given these two persons who show an interest in a homeshoring position, evaluate each one’s strengths and weaknesses relative to a largely unsupervised position of working at home.
To what extent do you think the concept of homeshoring will change the type of person who applies for these kinds of positions?

Explanation / Answer

The first candidate for the home shore rep, Rosalee, seems highly qualified and possessed the skills and experience necessary to perform this role. Her strengths are that fact that she has performed this role on 3 separate occasions, her weaknesses is that in each instance she was released (because of absenteeism and despite her performance) The latter draws into question what her performance was that it did not override her excessive absenteeism. Since Rosalee also has the desire to be closer to home now because of her personal situation (her elderly parents) I would recommend her for the role as a good fit. Rick has excellent communication skills and has the desire to be productive. He would also be a good candidate for this position. His weaknesses would be if his personal health would prevent him from working sufficient hours to fulfill this role. Otherwise I would recommend him also. The concept of home shoring will likely attract people who have a need or desire to be home for many hours during the day. Therefore My thought would be you would find candidates that have a personal situation that warrants them not wanting to be in an office (having kids, disability, handicap, antisocial, entrepreneurial) These factors will indeed encourage certain people to go for this type of role.
