Question
• Select one (1) of the first four (4) eras of business history ( Colonial, Industrial revolution, Industrial entrepreneurs, Production) and imagine a business person from that era managing a modern business today. Analyze the situation and determine what specific challenges that manager would face.• Recommend at least three (3) things your time-traveling manager should consider when managing today’s business workforce. Please be as specific as possible and keep the era from which your manager came in mind.
Explanation / Answer
I will settle for a manager from the Industrian Revolution age. This manager would face challenges arising from workplace diversity (more women and different races in the workforce), education (most workers are literate and even college trained), and affirmative action of the government (no hire and fire rules). The 3 recommendations I would provide are: 1. Be more accommodating of diversity in workplace. 2. Let the decision making be more participative. 3. Push responsibility down the chain rather than retain it up the chain.
