Topic 1:

The Heart of Darkness is one of the great literary criticisms of Imperialism in Africa. Marlow, the main character, is originally fascinated by the possibilities that exploring Africa has to offer a young man seeking his fortune and a name for himself, but he later becomes disillusioned with the process. Discuss why Marlow originally had faith in Imperialism, but then came to regret his participation in it.

Topic 2:

The painting by Manet titled “Olympia” in The Making of the West was intended to shock the smug, self-assured sensibilities of the bourgeoisie in Paris at the time. But paintings of nude women are a common subject throughout the history of art. Why is this painting different? To support your response, you might also google Manet’s painting “The Luncheon on the Grass,” another image that shocked the casual viewer in nineteenth century France.

Explanation / Answer

Marlow is a young man who wanted to experience the life in Africa. He took the job of a sailor on a British ship that worked for a Belgian company. The company worked in the trade of ivory.

Marlow was very excited to see life in Africa but after reaching the place he eventually found the place to be very bad. The Europeans used methods on the native African people which were against the norms of civilized society.

Marlow felt that the European people only exercised civility in the European countries and that once they entered uncivilized society, their behavior changed. The civilized people also started behaving like savages.

He saw European people using brute force against the native Africans. The native African has been treated in bad manner and they were most of the time overworked. They were also in bad shape and most of them had deteriorating health.

He also saw that people from Europe were losing their sanity due to the environment of the Africa countries. The whole environment combined with the brute exercise of power from the European people was making the people insane.

Thus, there was no separation between the civilized people and the savages. Once the environment is made same for both kinds of people, they start acting in the same manner and there is nothing to differentiate between them.

Thus, Marlow who had originally faith in imperialism later started regretting his participation in the journey that took him to the heart of Africa.
