Question
How to pick a supplier based on this data:
I was thinking to check if the average number of defects per lot was acceptable, which they all were. I did that by computing the AQL number of defects per lot and taking the average number of defects per sample and calculating the average number of defects per lot and checked to make sure it was less than the AQL. Now I'm a bit lost on what to compare next to make the appropriate decision.
This picture doesn't show all of the sample data, so I'm not looking for an answer. I'm mainly looking for suggestions on how to go about this.
Explanation / Answer
The AQL semms to be the only prominent factor to compare here, if the product specifications are given as being met by all the suppliers.
As per the Lexographic rule, on the first level we select the most significant criterion, and then we compare the supplier with respect to this criterion. If the supplier satisfies this criteria much better than the other suppliers then it is choosen, if not, we move on to the next criterion.
In this case since all the suppliers are fulfilling the required AQL, we can check which one is the supplier thats providing the least average number of defects, based on that we can select one. We can also make a graph(bar graph or a line graph), and plot the Average number of defects per lot for all the suppliers, and keeping AQL as the UCL, and check which supplier is closest to the x axis,( i.e. representing zero defects), and select that one.
Also, we can make a control chart, plotting all the average number of defects per sample, and keeping AQL as the UCL, and x axis, i.e. zero average defects as the LCL, and understand which supplier is the most consistent, i.e. which supplier's sample data's are scattered close together, and which ones are scattered a lot. The cose scattered one if under AQL, shows consistency, we can select the one with the best consistency in quality, because consistency in the quality of the product is sougth after in suppliers (if they are under acceptable quality limits, which is the case here).
