Chapter 13 discusses consumer choice decision rule; within these decision there are four different characteristics that describes consumers. Conjunctive rules, disjunctive rule, lexicographic, and elimination-by-aspects. Each one of these decision making process describes different behavior when it comes to making an important decision.

When searching for a job, what type of decision-making process would apply best to your decision of which job to take? Why? Be sure to identifiy a specific process (e.g. lexicographic, etc.) and argue why it is best.

Explanation / Answer

Decision making is a science in itself consisting of varied heuristics at the disposal when confronted with a choice to be made. Selecting/searching for a job involves the application of heuristics as the decision maker is blessed with several options to choose from viz. Ability to be promoted upward, salary, commission structure, type of company culture, type of work, company stability, bonus eligibility, medical coverage, anticipated hours of work per week, anticipated amount of business travel, etc.

This requires a hell lot of brainstorming so as to reduce the range and number of choices in the heuristic set. of course the list is arranged in the order of priority starting with the most important to not so important. This is more or less elimination by aspects where a single and only one cue gets evaluated at a particular given time. The process is repeated over several times until we have fewer choices or alternatives as compared to the initial list of alternatives.

Though at the outset it might appear that it is more or less like the lexicographic model where the decision attributes are given due importance one after the other starting with the most important with the least important. However this is not true with the elimination by aspects which also incorporates the very notion of an acceptable cutoff. Elimination by aspects is not as strict as lexicographic model as more of the attributes are most likely to be considered.

In the search for a job a candidate also goes through this phase of decision making. At first the candidates first screen the available jobs basis his level of competencies then give priority to different elements and attributes that help him through the selection of a particular job. A candidate constantly brainstorms different options until he/she is left with a select few. Once this is done then Options are further scrutinized and a detailed analysis is done before making the final job selections.
