The implementation of politics can benefit as well as hinder public safety administration. Some of the benefits politics play in public administration are as follows. Politics are sometimes utilized to get things done. When a new official is running for office he or she may make the completion of a bridge or the completion of any other major project one of their main leverage points to getting elected. This in turn may get them elected, and in turn may provide the public safety administrators with the funds, tools, etc. to complete the major project, if the elected official follows through with their promises. Politics can also be what one may need to get a job done. According to our articles for this week, I was informed that Public Safety Administrators are trained to be professionals, and taught the idea of minimizing or ignoring conflict. This is completely opposite for politics. So as stated before public safety administrators may need politicians on their side.
Politics may also hinder public safety administration. An example of why is as follows. Let's say that there is an issue arising and the current administration are possibly developing a plan to correct the issue. Well let's say a new administration is elected and they do not like the plan that the previous administration came up with and instead of continuing forward with correcting the issues, the progress is put on hold until the new administration goes back to the drawing board. A perfect example of this would be Obamacare. If a president is elected that opposes Obamacare but does not have a plan in place to replace the health insurance of those that currently use Obamacare before repealing it, then they are hindering progress and public safety.
Explanation / Answer
Public administration comprises two levels. One level consists of the political directorate (cabinets,
councils, advisory bodies). Members of the political directorate may be elected, co-opted, nominated
by interested groups or selected through some other means. The political directorate may also include
members from the military or civil services. The other level comprises permanent career officials and
bureaucratic organizations. Civil servants are supposed to be selected on merit, and spend their entire
careers in the civil service subject to satisfactory performance.
