I understand the role that politics play in public safety administration but overall I feel they hinder more than they help. I have found through my career that public safety professionals have a simple goal in mind, keeping the public safe whether that be as a police office of fire fighter. The politician and hence politics do not always have those same altruistic goals. Politics will enhance public safety and ministration when the goal of the individual engaging in politics has the same goals as the public safety professional. Unfortunately, this is not always true. I hate to be cynical but politicians usually have the overarching goal of getting elected and staying in power. If the political process surrounding public safety administration assists in this, then there is no greater champion than the politician. But when these goals differ, the political process and the politician can become toxic to public safety administration and many times use it as a bargaining chip for some other purposes. I am sure we all wish this was not the case but in today’s environment, the public’s safety is nothing more than something to use for political gain.
In the overall scheme I see politics as an overall negative to public safety administration but if the politics can be properly managed by a savvy administrator, negative effects hopefully can be minimized.
Explanation / Answer
The general public relies on variety of services for safety and security in every days life. These services are usually run by government agencies at local, state or federal level. Public safety management involves the coordination and administration of resources that provide for the safety and security of the society.
There are various factors that have an impact on public safety. One of this is the political system of the country. I agree to the point stated above, it needs more political will to strengthen public safety. There are many loop holes in this field like not sufficient no of police men and women, technically not updated departments and guidelines.
Public safety peoples like police men, fire fighters, traffic professionals do their work hard and have one goal to keep the public safe. While the politicians used this as a tool in election for votes and do many promises to come out with new ideas and results. But due to their weak policies or sometimes policies are strong but it should not be implemented correctly results in increase in crime rates, accidents, women not safe and many other social disorders that causes several difficulties to common people to live.
There are many negative effect of weak political interest to develop a safe society. It needs a strong leadership and implementation of policies to grassroots level.
