6. [3 pts] Does Table 1 provide evidence for co-evolution between the flies and the Poisontrees? Why or why not? (be concise)

7. [3 pts] The flies from the small island appear to be less effective at utilizing species of trees other than Poisontree. What does this imply regarding the nature of adaptation in the small island flies? (be concise)

8. [3 pts] Describe one scenario in which the ability to survive on Poisontree seeds could lead to the evolution of a premating isolating barrier between flies from the small island and flies on the main island. (Hint: this is where you get to use your imagination, but we are looking for biologically plausible scenarios!)

Explanation / Answer

6.

No, there is no evidence for co-evolution between the flies and poisontrees. Co-evolution is the influence of closely associated species on each other to bring evolutionary changes in each other over time.

7.

The small island flies were adapted to grow on poison tree seeds, as they are not exposed to any other tree species other than poison tree species. They are very new to the seeds of other tree species from main island. Therefore, they found less effective at utilizing seeds of other tree species, as they are already gaining from poison-tree seeds.

8.

It is clear that small island flies have the ability to survive on poison tree seeds, while main island flies are not. This ability and inability of the two flies lead to the evolution of premating isolating barrier.
