-Describe how you would test the hypothesis that the small island and the main island flies are separate species under the phylogenetic species concept. Be as specific as possible about the methods, sampling, etc. You can collect the materials on the islands and do any additional work after being rescued. Show what your results would look like if the two sets of flies were different species AND if they were not.

-Describe how you would test the hypothesis that the small island and main island flies are separate species under the biological species concept. Be as specific as possible about the experimental methods, sampling, statistical tests, etc. Again, you can do this work after you are rescued and have access to the necessary resources so dont be limited.

Explanation / Answer

* To test if the flies are phylogentic species or not, methods like Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE), can be used. In parsimony methods, discrete phylogenetic characters are used to infer one or more optimal phylogenetic trees. The characters considered are morphological, molecular, gentical, physiological, and behavioral.

* Careful observation is made to distinguish among the characters of the organisms mentioned above and all of them are tabulated. Computational input of these data is done to construct a phylogenetic relationship among the organisms

* To see if the flies collected are biological species or not, the flies and isolated, male and females and identified and isolated and are allowed for mating. the flies mate and reproduce only if they are biologically identifical species and cannot mate with biologically distint species.
