Question
In repair of large segmental bone defect, it is always difficult to match the exact contour of the defect of individuals with standardized commercial implants. In this case, it would be beneficial to customize the implant design based on the geometry of each defect. 3D printing can serve this purpose well. Please describe all the available 3D printing technology and identify the advantage and disadvantage for each of them. Meanwhile, how the 3D printing technology can be used to make porous Ti or Ti alloy implants for repair the large bone defect. And also briefly describe the procedures to make a customized bone implant using 3D printing
Explanation / Answer
The available 3D printing technologies: Stereo lithography; fused deposition modelling; selective laser sintering, selective laser melting, electronic beam melting, and laminated object manufacturing etc.
Advantages:
3D printing allows constructing new structures and shapes.
With the use of 3D printing we can increase the manufacturing speed.
Wastage is less, and manufacturing a new product is much cheaper.
Large scale production is possible.
Disadvantage:
Limited materials can be used to create desirable product.
Copy right able issue arise.
Dangerous items can be made.
Bigger sized products cannot be produced using 3D printing technology.
