Each player is given an equal chance to make the starting team based on performance, not on the coach’s personal bias.          Before Jumping to the conclusion of the type of Power which the Head Coach Hook would exercise , let us understand the concept behind each types of Power in the Leadership.

         There are 5 Types of Power in Leadership which comes under 2 categories

Formal Power Category

Example - Operations Manager says to his Production Supervisors either Achieve the Production Target or get replaced

3.Reward

            Rewarding an employee if he/she achieves the Target gets center stage in this Power style .This Rewards can be of Compensation Off, Bonus, Promotion, Team Lunch, Gift Vouchers etc. Example - Sales Person is rewarded with extra perks from the Sales Manager on achieving the target

4.Referent

           Referent power comes to a leader if he is most respected and trusted. When the team believes and respects the action executed by the leader takes the center stage of this Power Leadership style . Example - A Leader of the Political Party and the trust his Suboridinates has for its leader can be an example of this leadership style

5. Experience

        The power to the leader comes with his skill set and experience.The Leader gathers the expert power once he experience comes along his age and he/she becomes a thought leaders. Example - In a Software delivery program , the Techinical Project Manager has a control on the Technical solution and can guide his/her team towards delivering the Software model to the client

What Power Coach Hook Will exercise?

                    The Case has thrown two important aspects about Coach Cook .The First Aspect is Mr.Cook will want to play his own game and expects his players to follow the rules of his game. If Not the Players will be Fined / Suspended / Terminated and from this we lean towards saying Coach Cook will exercise Coercive Power . But is this True ?? The Answer may be a 'No' because the case throws the second Important aspect of the Coach Cook and perception what his Players have towards him .His Players see Mr.Cook as more than a Coach, they Actually worship him as a Role Model and they want to become like him . They respect him ,adore him and trust him and this suppress the Fear Factor since Mr.Cook is a Fair Man in the business.

   Hence the Coach Cook will exercise most closely to the Referent Power and to some extent an Experience power as he is also a Veteran Coach .These are the Personal Sources of Power of Coach Cook.
