An example of a work-related project would be a Residential Construction project. The CPM/PERT is used in residential construction projects for efficient management of activities. By using this technology of activity management they reduce the time it takes to complete the work. The CPM/PERT is used for a difference of breakdowns. The PERT is used where the time required for completion of each of the activities involved cannot be defined nor the resources used for the activity available. For example, an accuracy for activity A has to be completed before activity B. But the time required to complete A is unknown or B is uncertain. In that case PERT technique is used. The technique for the residential construction project are most suited in research and development, investigation and design. The CPM is used where the activity are definable and measurable. A breakdown of the characteristics of residential construction project is that the project must consist of well-defined activities that when completed will be the end of the project. The job must start or stop independently within a sequence. The job must be performed in technology sequence. Project management in the form of a CPM/PERT chart would be cost effective because the residential construction project can be completed within the time limit that is set and within the cost. This tool may be its success depends on how well it is used.

PERT and CPM are techniques of project management useful in the basic managerial functions of planning, scheduling and control .PERT stands for "Pragramme Evaluation& Review technique: and CPM are the abbreviation for "Critical Path method". These days teh projects undertken by business houses are very large and take a number of years before commercial production can start.
The techniques of PERT and CPM help greatly in completing the various jobs on schedule. They minimise production delays, interrruptions and conflicts. these techniques are very helpful in coordination various jobs of the total project on time.
PERT is a sophisticated tool used in planning , scheduling and controlling large projects consisiting of a number of activities independent of one another and with uncertain completion times.It is commonly used in resaerch and development projects.
