Question

How do we get "resources" for a technology project?

When you contribute to this discussion, you need to consider the human resources and financial resources as well as the technology resources. Some of the cost components are web server software, computer hardware, operating systems software, web site development software, software to analyze the performance of the website, firewall and antiviral software.

You might want to research the "dot.com failures of 2000."

There is a total cost of ownership (TCO) that evolves for this analysis. For example, small companies that desire a web site usually use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to run their web site. It allows the company to focus its attention on other areas of the business. Using a third-party or ISP host provider can be a good idea for several reasons: it saves money because the company does not have to pay for expensive equipment and labor costs for implementing and maintaining the system. Keep in mind that many ISPs offer different packages specified to meet the needs of a specific company.

Class: What would you imagine to be the key factors a company might consider prior to deciding to go with an ISP provider or host its own server?

Explanation / Answer

1. The first step is to identify the tools, equipments, facilities and other type of resources that are required for a technology project. The key task while procuring resources is to ensure that both the people and the equipment are available simultaneously. The project manager should determine the scope of the project and then evaluate the requirement of resources in terms of hardware and software as well as human resources. The project manager should then get sponsorship from the top management.

Resources can be (i) used from available in house resources (ii) can be purchased (iii) can be outsourced. The project manager can use a mix of the above three options, keeping in mind the costs involved, the scope and objective of the project.

2. Key factors to be considered prior to deciding to go with an ISP provider or host its own server:

(i) Price - what is the cost of using the services of an ISP provider versus the cost of hosting own server.

(ii) technical specifications - do you have the technical ability to meet the specifications in terms of content, processing power and disk space or will it better to outsource to an ISP that will be able to meet specifications.

(iii) In terms of hardware, do you have the required kind of machines in terms of servers? Does the ISP has the required kind of machines in terms of servers?
