Explanation / Answer

In the last job that I held, I was empowered to a large extent. The reasons for empowerment were as described under:

Usually power is considered a privilege, which has to be earned through consistent hard work and demonstrated capabilities. However, employee empowerment at all levels is an imperative for organizations particularly when operating in a complex business environment. Leadership can take following particular steps to promote empowerment within an organization. These are the actions that leadership took in my organization to promote empowerment of employees at all levels.

1. Foster open communication – usually organizations adopt a top down approach to communication, however, the organizations which have a more open policy with respect to communication, value feedback and communication from bottom up to define and refine their policies. Employees at lower levels feel empowered to take initiatives to bring up new ideas and communicate with the management, they feel themselves a part of the managerial decision making. It provides them motivation to get more and more involved with the business issues, which in-turn is a win-win situation for both the organization and the employees

2. Reward self improvement – leadership should implement robust and 360 degree feedback system, which provides feedback to employees about various aspects of their performance on the job and leadership should incentivize employees who capitalize on that feedback and bring about sustained improvement in themselves, to boost their productivity significantly.
