=========
Describe a possible sequence of events that could result in the transfer of an antibiotic resistance gene from the chromosome of an antibiotic-resistant, F+ bacterium to the chromosome of an antibiotic-sensitive, F- bacterium, thus changing the recipient cell into a cell that is antibiotic-resistant.
VERY IMPORTANT: Please do not copy-paste from books as I do have my own book(s), I need an answer from expert who really knows it. If you are unsure, please do not answer as it will only clutter this thread. Question asked for sequence of events, please try to formulate in a bulleted list.
Explanation / Answer
Antibiotic resistance of bacteria may be spread by vertical or horizontal transfer. In vertical transfer, the new offspring prouced by resistant bacteria inherit the resistant gene from their mother. Horizontal transfer occur when bacteria share their gene with other bacteria. Conjugation is Horizontal gene transfer can even occur between different bacterial species.
Plasmids are circular genetic (chromosomes) molecules, and they are not essential for normal growth of bacteria, but they contain genes essential for antibiotic resistance. Plasmids are the extra DNA carried by bacteria; they are transferred to other cells during the process of conjugation. The genes carried by plasmids code for proteins that are involved in unusual metabolic functions, and some carry genes that code for proteins that offer resistance to bacteria. The resistant bacteria do not respond to antibiotics.
