Effective Management is one of the single most important components of the overall success of any organization. I am in the Human Resources field, I have seen and experienced Theory X and Theory Y management in the small amount of time I have been in the workforce. For a company to attract and retain great employees it takes positive and motivational leadership from those in managerial positions. The video of Steve Jobs is relatively small, but really hits the nail in the coffin. At Apple, they have a "collaborative" working environment. Employees want to feel included, appreciated, trusted, and listened to.

Jobs explains how trust is important. A Theory X manager believes the average employee has no motivation, is lazy, and focused primarily on themselves and not the company. Unfortunately, this kind of manager prove themselves to be like a helicopter parent. The manager has no faith or trust on the employees abilities and inevitably pushes good workers away. Steve Jobs makes it a point to state that their is no hierarchy within Apple. Of course this is not literal, every company has an organizational structure regarding positions. However, you want all employees to feel they can contribute and succeed at the same capacity as all those aboveand below them.

Then there is the Theory Y manager who believes the average employee is motivated, enjoys their work in the company, and works to better themselves. This type of manager is more engaging and trusting of their employees. My manager who is the Director of the department I worked for at MDC represents this type of manager. She created a teamwork environment, trusted we all would achieve our individual responsibilities, and really listened to what we had to say. This produces a better work environment where the employee feels the manager is approachable. I believe that ultimately this is the right approach to manageent.

Explanation / Answer

Both the theories find applications in different organizational settings. Theory X finds more relevance in industrialized setting, wherein majority of work is mechanical, and the employees are semi-skilled or unskilled labors, who work on assembly line, producing largely undifferentiated products. Productivity incentives as well as penalties for inefficiencies are the means of motivation in such an environment. Carrot and stick approach works the best, because labors don’t view themselves an integral part of the business environment. Their interests are taken care by labor union, through collective bargaining. Practically business interests and interests of the workforce are in conflict with each other in such settings.

However, in contrast to that, today’s knowledge based economy is getting more and more service-oriented. Service sector is making more than 60% contribution to the GDP in most of the developed and developing economies. Theory X does not find application in organizations which are driven by knowledge and high-level skills. Employees are motivated through positive reinforcement. Participative management and collaborative approach works best in such business settings. It is important for management to provide a cohesive and conducive environment for creativity, collaboration, self actualization and participation by the employees at all levels. Employee empowerment is a fundamental prerequisite to get the best out of employees. in this respect, the writer’s viewpoint is agreeable.
