Explanation / Answer

The two basic dimensions of the conflict/engagement model are following

Avoidance – this is approach is low on both dimensions; both parties try to avoid conflict by not actively engaging in the negotiation process. Outcome is both parties tend to lose.

Accommodation – this approach is high on concern for others and low on concern for self. It’s a conflict absorber situation. Party considers the concern for other more important. Outcome is more beneficial to others at the expense of sacrificing self interest.

Confrontation – this approach is high on self concern and low on other’s concern. Each party dominates to have a higher share of the pie. Outcome is favorable to more aggressive party. This approach usually works, when the other party adopts an accommodating approach to conflict resolution.

Compromise – this approach is moderate on both dimensions. Both parties agree to have an equitable share of the pie. Outcome is equally favorable to both parties, with equal distribution of benefits among them.

Collaboration – this approach is high on both the dimensions, i.e. high on concern for self and for others. People are actively involved in collaboration and problem solving with open information exchange and resolution of differences to find a mutually win-win solution. Both parties strive to make the pie bigger for mutual benefit. The outcome is an optimum resolution, which provides maximum satisfaction while addressing concerns of to both the parties.
