Calculation: Your Company plans to transport 20 horses to a racetrack in Denver. You know that it takes 12 hours to drive directly from Phoenix to Denver. You also know that you have to stop and feed the horses every 2 hours. You also need a six-hour sleep every 10-hour drive. If you were the logistics operations manager responsible for this move, what would be your critical ratio if you had only 2 days left to meet your deadline and you only have to consider feeding the horses and taking your required amount of nap?
Explanation / Answer
Answer:
Total available hours to meet the deadline = 2 days = 48 hours
Minimum driving time from Pheonix to Denver = 12 Hours
To drive for 12 hours we need atleast 6 hours nap after 10 hours drive, that is total time excluding feeding breaks = 12 + 6 = 18 hours.
Since, feeding time is not given we assume it to be 1 hours time to feed all 20 horses, therefore total required time to drive from Pheonix to Denver = 12 hours + two 6 hours nap = 24 plus 1 hour feeding break after every 2 hour that is 12 feeding hours. So, total time requirement shall be 24 + 12 = 36 hours.
If we want to form an equation then,
let the number of sleeping naps be x and number of feeding hours be y; then
6x + y + 12 should be less than or equal to 48.
