Question

The CEO of XYZ Corporation decides to take a similar approach to performance reward systems used by General Electric/Jack Welch and a number of other organizations. This includes: 1) requiring managers each year to rank their employees by three categories: High Performers (Only top 10%), Middle Performers (80%), and Low Performers (Bottom 10%) and 2) distributing year-end bonuses and raises to employees commensurate with their ranking classification. Top performers would receive the largest bonuses and raises while bottom performers would not receive any bonuses or raises, and in fact, would be managed out of the organization if unable to improve.

Consider the different concepts (e.g., Positive and Negative Reinforcement; Punishment; Schedules of Reinforcement) and perspectives (e.g., Kerr, 1995) you have learned about this week regarding the reinforcement of people's performance:

Do you agree with the CEO's approach? Why or why not? Please do not plagiarize. Please reference is using someone else's work.

Explanation / Answer

The CEOs partially correct and justifiable he has done the right method of distributing the incentives however giving no bonus to the non performers is also not correct he should atleast provide verly less bonus but needs to give. He has bifercated the total incentive in terms of percentage and the individual performance their is always a PIP (performance incentive plan) where one can be given time to improve but not giving him the bonus is just not accepted at the CEOs level. The CEO is the backbone of the company if he starts behaving this way with the employee is not at all acceptable and shows carelessness in his work he is not regarding the poor performers rather he should ensure that the poor performers are brought in limelight and are trained for improving their performance.
