After reading “Madison Community Hospital Addresses Infection Control Prevention”, I have decided that the most useful aspects of the FOCUS model to target the improvement efforts are to clarify the problem, and to organize the team for implementation. In order to address the process of infection control prevention my task force would start by using a flowchart to map out the steps we need to take; increasing the use of gloves, or adding more hand sanitizing stations throughout the clinic, to name a few. I would also encourage all personnel to identify areas of infection prevention in which we may be lacking; since they are always on the floor and may know more than their managers what could be helpful. “Groups need to include feedback mechanisms that evaluate and improve their effectiveness” (Van Servellen, 2009). After identifying which option best works for our clinic and employees, I would organize a task force to implement the measures chosen. Although I believe the organization as a whole should be part of the implementation, as a health care manager I cannot be the sole head of the task force. I would appoint upper level management to inform mid-level management of the processes to be implemented and how we will go about implementing them. Mid-level managers will be in charge of training all personnel on the processes. It is important for all management levels to be involved in the process because management is a role model to all employees, as such we need to set an example for our employees to follow if we want our processes to be successful.
“The delivery of health care includes many repetitive workflows” (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). Automation will enhance these workflows by making them more effective and efficient. It will create effectiveness by getting the right things done, such as filling prescriptions, or uploading test results. This effectiveness in turn will create efficiency by avoiding wasting time and resources. This will benefit the health care providers because it will give them more time to focus on proving quality care for patients.
Electronic medical records are an essential and valuable automation technology for health care providers. They come with many benefits for providers, as well as patients. However, with great power comes the great responsibility of keeping patient information safe and private. As a health care manager I would implement a team in charge of patient files. Only they will be allowed to access files, and pass patient information to other health care providers, if necessary. Of course, all providers in the office will be able to add information to the patient’s chart via a remote access point, and will be able to view a patient’s full chart only if the patient has a visit. “Patients reveal very intimate details about themselves and their families, which may be denunciatory or incriminating” (Van Servellen, 2009). It is important to make the patient feel that they are in a safe and trustworthy environment in order to effectively treat them. Keeping patient information private from public viewing is not the only privacy we should worry about, we also need to keep it confidential in office in order to minimize blurting out patient information.
