Question

respond to the post and say whether you agree or disagree with the student's analysis and why.

1. Euthanasia is the process of having a death that is peaceful when you have a terminal illness (one that cannot be cured) and it is different from physician-assisted death, however, physician-assisted death has two forms, passive which is well-known and is more of common euthanasia, and active, which is worse.

2. Due to the safeguard and guidelines of assisted death policies, I believe they are just and honorable for the patient's wishes, even though they are about the death of a patient, one of the things a doctor does not want to do, but must in severe situations.

3. If assisted death is legalized throughout the 50 states, the challenges I may face as a health care provider are whether or not I can go through knowing that a facility that saves lives takes them away as well. Another problem is whether or not I can live with myself knowing that a life is taken away by request day by day.

4. A physician can respect the patient's wishes and maintain an ethical practice of medicine by performing their jobs better, collaborating with specialists on the matter at hand. and reduce euthanasia by assisting the patient the best way they can.

Explanation / Answer

Paragraph 1:

In this paragraph the student has defined euthanasia and has written that it is different from physician-assisted death. This is very true. Euthanasia is a way of bringing about death in a quick and painless manner for patients who are terminally-ill (that is they are having a disease which is not curable and can be agonizing) and the doctor or physician himself/herself brings about death. On the other hand, a physician-assisted death is one where the physician helps the patient to bring about death onto himself/herself (the physician gives the knowledge or means to end life by the patient).

I disagree that “physician-assisted death has two forms, passive and active”. It has only one form where the patient ends his/her life by personally taking some lethal dosage or injection of a medicine. This is similar to active euthanasia.

Paragraph 2:

I agree with the student’s analysis here. Most of the physician-assisted death policies provide safeguards and guidelines with respect to legal, social, moral, ethical and religious issues dealing with suicide or murder. Also it is the duty of the physician to reduce sufferings of a patient.

Paragraph 3:

I agree with the student’s analysis here. The job of a doctor is to save life and not to end it and thus a healthcare facility is usually supposed to save a life. But if there is/are death (s) everyday in the healthcare facility because of euthanasia (which is legalized throughout the country), then one does get mentally disturbed.

Paragraph 4:

Here also I completely agree with the student’s analysis. Physician should take help of specialists and try to reduce incidents of euthanasia as much as possible (may be by trying to go for palliative care) so that deaths in hospitals are reduced to the maximum extent possible.
