Question
I am trying to write an article with the prompt:
Your best friend at work has been showing up late for work, and even then is not doing all of the things she needs to do. You have been covering for her for about 2 weeks.
What is your moral duty in this situation? What should you do? Defend your answer.
We are supposed to use ethical theories from our book to defend our answer. I am having trouble deciding which of these theories most closely would pertain to this prompt, and how they do so.
Here is a list of several of the theories we have been given.
I. Utilitarianism
II. Rights/ Kantianism
III. Justice/ Rawls
IV. Natural Law/Divine Command
V. Relativism
VI. Virtue Ethics
VII. Care Ethics
VIII. A Practical Approach:
Reasonable Person Utilitarianism
Quasi-Kantianism
The Moral Paradigm Test
Explanation / Answer
Virtue ethics:
It is one of the methodologies of normative ethics. The approach emphasis completely on the duty and responsibility that one has to perform.
Relativism:
It is a point of view which has only relative and subjective value and has no absolute truth on itself.
Conclusion:
In this case, the person must act as per his/her responsibility towards the job. He should not cover her friend and should not follow relativism theory. He should explain her duties and responsibilities.
