1) HP was once an innovation driven company. But slowly after recession, along with the most of the companies, HP started focusing on the cutting down the people and down sizing the teams. It then focused on the cost cutting and profit making. With a stabilized position in the market, HP tried to lay back its hands on the Innovation. With these transitions, let's see what are the strategic issues the company faced.
Main strategic issues in the HP case -
2) HP could not find the right leader for the organization to regain its lost culture - culture of innovation. They found it difficult to find the right person to lead the company. Hurd and Apothekar were two extreme personalities HP had. Hurd 's focus was to increase efficiency and Apothekar's focus was over utilization of the resources and changing the way how things are. Both are two extreme personalities who were focussing on their interests but not on the interests of the company.
3) Apothekar had a disastrous tenure with HP. Company had a very hard time under his leadership. Under his tenure, company was dysfunctional and struggled finding a right direction. Leaders need to be more goal oriented and visionary. Apothekar had none of the traits. His leadership proved that his strategies were not oriented towards the company's vision, and neither are his goals. Apothekar was a technology enthusiast. This made his the CEO of HP.
As per my opinion, a leader like Apothekar cannot lead an organization which is in slump position. Because, such companies need a strong leader who is a visionary. Apothekar can only lead a well established company which is huge on profits and well versed on strategies.
