Question

During the last legislative session in Austin in 2015, representatives and state senators passed a law allowing those who are licensed to carry handguns in Texas with the ability to now carry concealed those same handguns on college campuses beginning this August, 1st, 2016. For community colleges, the start date for Licensed to Carry or LTC is August 1st, 2017. Again, this does not allow for the "open carry" of these weapons, only concealed carry. Also, the legislature gave colleges and universities the ability to restrict to certain areas the ability of LTCs to carry on campuses. All of this has created some controversy with students and faculty in Austin and other state universities to protest the law, either for or against. Other schools such as A&M have seemed to take the law in stride.

In your opinion, is concealed carry a good thing to introduce to college campuses? Will it matter given that you have to be 21 to carry a handgun in Texas? Would you feel safer or less safe if you knew some of your fellow students and or faculty were possibily carrying? What could be some potential benefits of the change in law as well as potential problems?

Do some research on this topic if you choose to write about it.

I have included a few links for you to review as well. Please note that this topic is controversial and we are not trying to solve the world's problems but just having a dialogue about what I hope are interesting topics. :-)

Explanation / Answer

To anwer the above question it is not necessary to consider the legal point of view rather can be answered in a generalized public and ethical and safety point of view.

The gunculture is increasing now a days. Schools or colleges are a place which are considered divine to learn and educate onself. It is a place to nurture and grow. It should be peaceful, lively and should be diciplined. Allowing the guns to be carried along with students although in concealed state is not correct. The purpose of coming to colleges is to learn. There exists no point of carrying a gun by anyone and it is inappropriate to carry a gun. Usually guns are to be possessed by only people who are in providing and mainating safety of the public such as police but not in the hands of common man and students.

The governance and security system exists to lookafter the public. There is no need for the public to assort to violent actions with use of guns.

Allowing guns in the college campuses is a threat to the other studnets, Students whose maturity levels are low and cannot judge between good and bad may misuse the guns and may cause threat to others life. It also encourages a violent atmosphere among the students which is not good for them. It will have negative impact on the students behaviour. There will be a sense of insecurity among the students. Unnecessary violent behaviour will be provoked with the gun culture. Students should be away from all violent activities and should have a peaceful learning environment.

The use of guns should be strictly prohibited in certail places such as college campuses, and in most of the public places where there is less threat to one's life.
