Question
We are turning now to a new philosophical question: What is the self? That is, what is it, if anything that makes a person the person that they are, different than any other person? What gives us our identities, if anything?
In your small groups, create a thread and answer this question: What do you think it is that makes you who you are? What is your self?
This is a tricky question. To explain: What is it, if anything, that is essentially you? For something to be essentially a part of you, this means that without it, you would not be the same person. Of course, there are many things that are part of ourselves, but they may not be essential. For example, think of the clothes you wear. They in some sense express who you are, but you could wear different clothes and still be who you are. So, your clothes aren't essential for you to be you. What part of who you are, if any, is an essential part of you? What makes you the person that you are, do you think?
