Question
Do you think than an intelligent process control (IPC) system can be effectively applied to a manufacturing system where production is scheduled in short runs of small batch quantities? Explain. Note: When the production mix represents a family of similar product designs and the batches are produced within a manufacturing cell, this is referred to as cellular manufacturing. A cell is a self-contained mini-factory where all operations necessary to complete a product are performed by employees who have multiple skills and can rapidly change over from one product to the next.
Explanation / Answer
I believe that an IPC system can be effectively applied to a manufacturing system where production is scheduled in short runs of small batch quantities. The shop floor of cellular manufacturing facility will produce a reasonable quantity of data that will usually be noisy. The data being produced can be analyzed and then used in a productive manner through the use of IPC. The intelligent process control system will help in optimization of control tasks in cellular manufacturing through planning, scheduling, monitoring and executing. This helps in proper identification of the different causes of quality faults. The objective of cellular manufacturing is to optimize different measures of performances like cycle time or productivity or any other measure. IPC will help the manufacturing system to enhance quality control by identifying the existing faults.
